There is concern from many that you can develop scalp cancer from Toppik. Before we can make an informed decision we should first find out what skin cancer, and more specifically, scalp cancer, is. Skin cancer is the abnormal growth of keratinocytes or skin cells. It’s the most common form of cancer in the U.S. Twp common types of skin cancer are basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer.

Cancer of the scalp is a type of squamous cell skin cancer. It occurs in balding men due to the fact their scalps are often exposed to the radiation from the sun. It isn’t unheard of though, that someone with a full head of hair will develop scalp cancer. Scalp cancer is an aggressive form of Squamous cell cancer, or SCC. If diagnosed early, scalp cancer can be completely treated. The most important symptoms include irritation of the scalp, formation of red nodules or bleeding from lesions on the scalp. Diagnosis can be done through a routine biopsy. Surgical removal of the scalp cancer is the best treatment.

The best way to avoid scalp cancer is by wearing hats out of doors, applying a good sunscreen and staying out of the midday sun. Toppik is a hair covering material that hides the thinning hair and balding appearance. It’s based on the idea of using micro-fibers that are similar to the protein in normal hair. The fibers of hair are charged with static to bond with the surrounding normal hair. This creates the appearance of covering the affected balding area. Toppik is effective for both men and women. Toppik does not cause cancer in and of itself. It’s usage however, makes it difficult to see the cancer forming on normal hued skin. The concern that skin cancer from Toppik is a possibility is a myth.
